For us this is by far one of the most challenging weeks capturing video each year! With four straight days of hauling around both ski and camera gear, hiking, ski touring, booting, side stepping, setting up and tearing down cameras, tripods and microphones, and completing a 3:00 edit each night, it safe to same I’m exhausted! BUT, this is also one of the most fun weeks of filming too!
The Ski City Shootout is a photography competition that is held each year in the Wasatch Mountains, hosted by the four Salt Lake City ski resorts, Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude. Eight photographers are paired up with three ski athletes, draft style, at the opening Monday night social. Tuesday morning each team is off to the races, assigned one resort each of the four following days. On the last night, Friday, photographers are asked to turn in their best two photos from each resort by midnight. Saturday the judges choose the best images in three categories, Best of Show, Best Portfolio, and Athletes Choice. There is also a category for Instagram and an Urban Meets Mountain category open to the public.
Each day we team up with one of the photographer and follow them around during the morning hours capturing behind the scenes shenanigans as the photographer and athletes get to work trying to capture their two shots of the day. Once we have enough video captured to create a 1-3 minute edit we’re out of there and back to the studio to piece things together for our videos that are show at the party on Saturday night.
